Etymology
From Portuguese penhorar ("to seize as pledge"), via Latin pignorāre("to pawn"). Used along the West African coast, 17th-18th c., to describe seizing property as collateral. The word carries weight — reclaiming what's owed when the system won't help.

The Problem
